The bottom line on the most important position in football, maybe even in all of sports: The Miami Dolphins are deeper at quarterback than they have been in a long, long time. Three deep. Three interesting storylines. Three players who each, at this very early juncture, can make a clear-cut argument for starting in Houston on Sept. 9th.
There will be a Mandich on the Dolphins practice field this weekend. His name is Nick and he’s a tight end from tiny South Connecticut State. He is the youngest of Jim Mandich’s sons and the fact that the Dolphins are giving him a shot is both meaningful and classy.
Sometimes you take things for granted. You see a player like Junior Seau. You see a person like Junior Seau. And you don’t truly appreciate his greatness. You don’t spend time saluting what he did as a player and you don’t spend time admiring what he did as a person.
It began with a quarterback. That alone might say everything you need to know. It followed with a big, strong, smart offensive tackle, then a muscular defensive end brimming with potential and a pass-catching tight end who can race down the middle of the field.
The best draft picks in Dolphins history? It’s an interesting debate that gets even more interesting when you factor the value of the pick. It’s one thing to get Dan Marino in the first round of the 1983 draft, but to get him with the 27th pick of that round is even more impressive.
This is Jeff Ireland’s time. His moment. The stage he covets the most.
There is a calming feeling when you listen to Mike Sherman, a feeling that tells you the Dolphins offense will be just fine under his direction. In so many ways, he is the perfect fit for this franchise.
There may never be another Dolphins player quite like Ricky Williams. Talented. Controversial. Cerebral. Introspective. Independent. At times hard to figure. But always hard to tackle.
Ten days have passed. So many things to like. Joe Philbin has gotten off to an impressive and productive start in his early days of coaching the Miami Dolphins.
A first impression? The new head football coach of the Miami Dolphins is a very impressive man.
