“Troy is invaluable to our organization,” stated O’Neill. “His work ethic and professionalism have benefited our players for over 21 years. I'm proud to work with him and join our entire organization in congratulating him on this most deserving award.”
“We are excited that Troy was honored with this prestigious award,” said Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland. “He along with Kevin, Nao and Jon personifies the spirit of this award and highlights the extraordinary job that our training staff does on a day-to-day basis.”
A graduate of Purdue University, Maurer began his NFL career by serving undergraduate internships with both the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets. Upon graduation from Purdue, he accepted a seasonal athletic trainer position with the Colts in 1989 before being hired by Doctors’ Hospital in Coral Gables as an athletic trainer in the physical therapy department in 1990. Prior to joining the Dolphins, Maurer was Head Basketball Athletic Trainer and Assistant Football Athletic Trainer at Kansas State University during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons.
Maurer is the second recipient of the honor, which recognizes one assistant athletic trainer form each conference. As voted by the members of the PFATS, this award is emblematic of the commitment, dedication and high level of integrity that Tim Davey brought to the field of Athletic Training and is representative of his level of service which he dedicated to his surrounding community.
The award is named after Tim Davey, a 33-year NFL veteran employee who worked as an athletic trainer for the New York Jets and in the league’s game operations department before his passing in 2010.
